The woman who wrote the book Catherine, called Birdy (about I think Catherine
the Great?--a book for middle schoolers--)has also written a book about a girl
who lives during the California Gold Rush. Both highly recommended.

Also of course Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry about the years before the civil
rights movement got started, by Mildred Taylor.

Dear folks,

Just started teaching middle school. Top-down curriculum all the way.
World geography and American (read rich, white, male) history from
the textbook.
Can someone suggest some gender neutral fiction that corresponds
with those themes. Thank you for listening...
