We should not, however, imagine that success follows anything except
equal representation. That is a necessary condition for success--and the
world has a very long way to go before women and girls can be said to
have equal representation. It would be self-centered in the extreme to
imagine that small successes for women in the upper classes in white
postindustrial niches actually represent success for the masses of women
who walk the earth. Before we get there we will not only have to learn
to talk without mincing, but we will also have to act.
