This comment is addressed to one of Rochelle Riling's points: we have
found that students gain considerable courage from being able to choose
a friend of any age to accompany them to interviews with school
adults--this is a very good way to provide some support for the harassed
child at lower levels of harassment.
At more intense levels of harassment, we found that often the Title IX
officer had been chosen in such a way as to be unsympathetic to the
harassed group, and therefore it is better to have a policy that the
child may go to and be accompanied by any adult he/she chooses/trusts.
In any accusations of rape, a child reporting should have a rape
counselor from an independent agency present at all interviews.
