Each day I present 8th grade students with an opening question. Today I put the
college professor data on the board. The question was "Is this gender bias?"
Students wanted me to clarify the meaning of bias. I did. Then they almost
spontaneously offered their answer. YES.
What a great lead into discussion of gender bias and how it already impacts
their lives. The girls were shocked that the boys thought of their quiet
non-responsive behavior as being stupid. It was great. If I had scripted the
whole thing, I couldn't have done better. Both genders benefited.
