I am sending you some information about a great summer

appreciate it if you could disseminate this information as broadly
as possible. If you have any questions, please let me know. The
brochure will be ready the middle of March and I will be pleased to

               SMITH COLLEGE SUMMER INSTITUTE FOR
                             EDUCATORS:

Resources and effective strategies for encouraging
                        and empowering girls

               Smith College, Northampton, Massachusetts

                           July 15-18, 1999

Smith College announces a new three-day Summer Institute for
educators created for a variety of participants such as:
 - two-person teams-including a math or science teacher and a
health educator, guidance counselor or administrator-from middle
schools or junior or senior high schools
 - group leaders, youth counselors, social workers, school-based
counselors and others from community-based programs and
agencies that serve girls.

The Summer Institute features an interactive workshop on current
research on gender equity and adolescent girls' health. The
institute helps educators foster the healthy and successful
development of girls, both in and outside the classroom. It will
explore the most critical issues in girls' lives today and offer
effective strategies for helping girls negotiate the many challenges
 they face.

The Summer Institute will combine two successful Smith summer
programs. The first of them, the Current Students/Future
Scientists and Engineers Program, has for more than 15 years
provided math and science teachers and guidance counselors
nationwide with effective strategies for combating gender-bias in
classrooms and schools. The second, "Our Health, Our Futures:
A project By and For Adolescent Girls," has since1997 brought
together high school girls, undergraduates, and professionals in
medicine, education and social service to research and write Our
Health, Our Futures, a resource manual that provides a
comprehensive view of girls' lives today. These two innovative
programs provide the broad foundation for the new summer
institute.
