Hi everyone. Happy Myra Sadker Day and Women's History Month.

I found the information below in honor of Black History Month, but the deadline
is in March, so I just wanted to pass it along.

ESSAY CONTEST
The NAACP Back-To-School/Stay-In-School (BTS/SIS) Program is launching its 3rd
Black History Month Essay Contest. Youths participating in the contest must be
between the ages of 11 and 18 and must be enrolled in an NAACP BTS/SIS program
or a member of an NAACP youth council or college chapter. The first place winner
of the contest will receive a $1000 savings bond, the second place winner, a
$600 savings bond, and the third place winner, a $400 savings bond. Winners will
be announced at the 1999 NAACP National Convention in New York City, New York in
July.

ESSAY GUIDELINES

Essay contest participants, you will, in 700 words or less, write an essay on an
African American figure that you admire or consider to be a hero. The person
does not have to be a famous African American. Your essay should detail why you
admire this person and how they have impacted your life or the life of someone
else.

All entries should be typed or neatly hand written on 8 1/2 x 11 lined paper.
Please include your NAACP unit, your name, address, telephone number, and your
NAACP advisors name address and telephone number. If your are a participant in
an NAACP BTS/SIS Program please indicate the NAACP unit and the Coordinator's
name and telephone number.To Become a member of the NAACP simply include with
your essay, a check or money order in the amount of $3.00 made payable to the
NAACP. Entries must be received on or before March 15, 1999. DEADLINE: MARCH
15, 1999
