THE SCIENCE AND POLITICS OF THE SEARCH FOR SEX DIFFERENCES

A Special Issue of the NWSA Journal

Anne Fausto-Sterling, along with others in feminist science studies,
argues that women's studies faculty and feminists in the sciences need to
join forces in order to develop fully multidisciplinary women's studies
theory and research. This year 2000 special issue is intended to feature
articles that foster feminist analyses of the scientific evidence for the
sex differences from biology, neurobiology, behavior genetics,
evolutionary psychology, and sociobiology, as well as the medical
sciences. Essays should be accessible, and of interest, to the general
multidisciplinary audience of NWSA Journal.

While research on sex differences may produce important new insights into
the biology of women's bodies, it can also make deeply troubling
contributions to essentialist understandings of women's subordination.
We invite manuscripts that consider the implications of sex difference
research from any field or perspective within women's studies, including
but not limited to feminist science studies, lesbian studies,
cross-cultural studies, standpoint theory, gender theory, as well as
philosophical, historical, psychological, sociological, or
language-focused research. We are also interested in research that
explores the interconnections among biological determinist approaches and
any of the key categories of societal "difference" as these relate to
women. We strongly encourage manuscripts that are a product of
collaboration among colleagues across the humanities/social sciences and
sciences disciplinary divide.
