Mothers Helping Daughters

Dear C123... and others:
I understand your frustration with mothers for encouraging their
daughters to grow up like Barbie-dolls, brainless and body-obsessed. In
all cultures women are held responsible for shaping their daughters
along the lines required by patriarchal culture. But the fault lies in
the patriarchal shape of the culture itself, and those who profit most
from it are most responsible for changing it. The mothers you denounce
are joined by many others, such as yourself, who are actually the first
line of defense and the frontier of change for their daughters. As long
as we overlook this, we encourage the spectacle of women taking the
brunt of condemnation for the culture's twists, when in fact they too
are shaped and distorted by it.

Let's support the wave of mothers who are saying, No discrimination and sexual
harassment for my daughter!
