What is the International Telementor Center?
The International Telementor Center is a program at Center for Science,
Mathematics & Technology Education at the Colorado State University
(CSMATE) thatfacilitates electronic mentoring relationships between
professional adults and students worldwide. The program provides
a way for industry professionals, working with educators, to help
students achieve academic excellence in math and science, improve their
communication skills, and develop career and educational plans for the
future. The ITC acts as a telementoring clearinghouse for students,
teachers, mentors, and mentor organizations. It is projected to serve at
least 10,000 student annually by the year 2003.

Why is the International Telementor Center needed?
Although research shows that face-to-face mentoring programs can have a
variety of positive impacts, many talented and committed professionals
believe they simply don't have the time to make that kind of commitment.
The International Telementor Center offers the means for busy
professionals to share their know-how and provide academic
guidance to students by spending 30-45 minutes a week communicating with
them by e-mail.

Who is leading the International Telementor Center?
The International Telementor Center is managed by the Center for Science,
Mathematics & Technology Education (CSMATE), one of the nation's leading
nonprofit educational organizations specializing in programs that foster
improvements, innovations, and reforms in science, mathematics, and
technology instruction at all levels, K-16. CSMATE is located at Colorado
State University.

CSMATE's Board of Directors consists of chief state school officers,
educators, business leaders and other education professionals. CSMATE
manages programs, conducts research, and provides consulting services for
local school districts, states, federal agencies, and private enterprises.

Among its program management engagements are the Colorado Integrated
Mathematics Initiative, Small-Scale Chemistry Institutes, Regional
Elementary Mathematics Teacher Enhancement Project, Colorado Science
Teacher Enhancement Project, and Summer Math: Using Mathematics
Manipulatives. CSMATE also has a general focus on making science and math
relative to the demands of the workplace.

In October, 1998, Hewlett-Packard's award-winning E-mail Mentor Program
was relocated to CSMATE and become the foundation of the ITC. CSMATE staff
are responsible for the management of the ITC, the recruitment of
corporate members and schools, and program evaluation.

Educators interested in finding out more or having their students mentored
by a scientist, go to the Website for the International Telementor Center
