NEWS BRIEFS
**********************************

1. PBS Hosts Television Race Initiative

The Television Race Initiative (TRI) is a multi-tiered effort in which
diverse, character-driven, high-profile television broadcasts create an
opportunity for sustained community dialogue and problem solving around the
issue of race relations. In partnership with national and community- based
organizations, TRI uses storytelling - in the form of public television
broadcasts - to break the ice and encourage essential conversations that
lead to constructive action.

The latest in the series is the PBS documentary Rabbit in the Moon, directed by
Sundance award- winner Emiko Omori, which will air on July 6th, 1999 at 10 p.m.
on PBS (check local listings). This powerful program reflects on the personal
and political consequences of internment during WWII for the Omori family in the
Japanese American community. Omori asks her family and other detainees to
reflect on their experiences at the internment camps.

For more information about how to use the broadcast of Rabbit in the Moon to
spark and sustain dialogue around race relations in your community,
workplace, or place of worship, contact Anisha Narasimhan with the
Television Race Initiative at 415-553-2841 or Television Race Initiative at 415-553-2841 or tunein@pov.org.
