Announcing a Conference and Call for Papers - Please Distribute Widely

"Gaudy Night: Celebrating Women's Colleges"
12-13 November 1999

Keynote Speaker will be M. Elizabeth Tidball, co-author of _Taking
Women Seriously: Lessons and Legacies for Educating the Majority_, ACE/Oryx
Press 1999.

Topics and panels are welcome from all disciplines.
All proposals must be submitted by July 15 1999 and include:

1. A 400-500-word abstract including a title of the paper or panel to
be presented and identifying what sort of presentation it is, such as a
single paper, roundtable topic, a workshop, or organized panel, etc.
2. List of persons presenting and address/affiliation
3. Equipment needed for presentation

--the experience of black women at both historically black women's
colleges and at other colleges
--the image of women's colleges
--the literature of the women's college experience
--Dorothy Sayers' Gaudy Night
--ways of knowing (women's, gendered, collaborative, diverse)
--women faculty at women's colleges
--career opportunities for graduates of women's colleges
--the "role model" vs "mentor" image of women faculty at women's
colleges
--the artist and the women's college experience - the history of
dancers/choreographers/musicians/artists/composers
--friendships made at women's colleges
--connections and disconnections
--women's colleges and their contribution to developing a unique voice
for women
--students' experience of life at a women's college over time

Wilson College is a small, liberal arts college for women located in
South Central Pennsylvania in Chambersburg on the intersection of Interstate 81
and Route 30 (the Lincoln Highway). It is located about 1 1/2 hours from
Washington D.C. The nearest airport is in Hagerstown, MD. Other
accessible airports include Harrisburg, BWI, Dulles, and National.
