I've been following this discussion all along with great interest.
Immersion reminds me of the "survival of the fittest" theory. If one
cannot keep up, then natural selection will weed out the weak ones. Only
in this case, we have children who have to deal with cultural context as
well as with language issues. Language and its aquisition are extremely
complicated, particularly when coupled with developmental differences and
personal issues with schooling in general. We often teach "foreign
lanuage" in our schools at the secondary level and encourage second
language acquisitioon there- but without the total immersion method.
Interesting. Immersion's ok for "them" but not for "us." HMMMM. Just a
thought......
