On Oct. 13, the House Education and Workforce Committee
eliminated the gender equity provisions in a major federal
education bill, the Student Results Act (HR 2). Groups such
as the Independent Women's Forum worked to have these
provisions deleted from current law.
The House can restore these provisions and is likely to vote
on HR 2 on Oct. 20.
The provisions that were eliminated include:
--Women's Educational Equity Act (WEEA)-the only federal
education program dedicated to women and girls.
--Teacher Training-eliminating gender bias in the classroom.
--Technology Development-developing an innovative and
equitable learning environment.
--Drop-out Prevention-helping pregnant and parenting teens
stay in school.
