National History Day discussion list announced

Hello, women's history enthusiasts --
The National Women's History Project offers annual prizes for the California
and the National History Day competitions each year, and sends someone to
help with judging each. We've delighted in watching the number of women's
history entries increase exponentially over the past few years. If you or
an organization you belong to are already involved, this list might prove
helpful. If you are not yet involved, it might prove interesting just the
same, showing you what all is involved.

ANNOUNCING H-NET's NATIONAL HISTORY DAY DISCUSSION LIST
Sponsored by
H-Net, Humanities & Social Sciences On-line; Michigan State University;
National History Day Society

H-HistoryDay provides a forum for the more than 40,000 teachers, public
historians, librarians, and other educators who participate in National
History Day each year. The discussion list will allow them to share
methodological and thematic ideas, approaches, and problems. Both
veteran History Day teachers and those participating in the program for
the first time will benefit from exchanging ideas; the list will also
provide an opportunity for public historians and librarians to
communicate with teachers. Anticipated topics for discussion include
the integration of History Day into the curriculum, the nuts and bolts
of doing History Day projects, the development of research and critical
thinking skills, the use of libraries and other research centers,
suggestions for specific research topics related to the annual theme,
the availability and use of primary sources, recommendations for
secondary sources, and approaches for museums and historic sites to
work with History Day students.

The list is sponsored by the National History Day Society.

The H-HISTORYDAY list is co-edited by Bea Hardy, Outreach and Program
Coordinator National History Day, bb19@umail.umd.edu, and Jim McNeill,
South Carolina History Day Coordinator, South Carolina History Day Coordinator, mcneill@scdah.state.sc.us. The
editors serve two-year renewable terms, with the approval of the H-Net
Executive Committee and rotate their duties. The current editor will be
identified in all messages coming from the list. The editors will
solicit postings (by email, phone and even by regular mail), will
assist people in managing subscriptions and setting up options, will
handle routine inquiries, and will consolidate some postings. Anyone
with suggestions about what H-HISTORYDAY can and might do is invited to
send in ideas. The editors will solicit and post newsletter-type
information (calls for conferences, for example, or listings of
sessions at conventions.) They will also commission book and article
reviews, and post book announcements from publishers. H-HISTORYDAY
will be moderated to filter out extraneous messages (like requests for
subscription) and items that do not belong on H-HISTORYDAY. They may
belong somewhere else, or in the judgment of the editors they do not
aid the scholarly dialogue. The editors will not alter the meaning of
messages without the author's permission. The list is advised by a
board of field experts.

Logs and more information can also be found at the H-Net Web Site,
located at http://www.h-net.msu.edu/.
