Geraldine Anne Ferraro

BIRTHDAY: August 26, 1935

ABOUT HER
After working for 14 years as a lawyer in New York, Geraldine Ferraro became a U.S. representative in 1978 and in 1984 became the first woman to win the nomination of a major U.S. party for vicepresident.

She has always worked for the rights of women and the elderly, leading the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment as well as sponsoring the Women's Equity Act, and fighting cuts in Social Security. She fought the cuts in Reagan's economic plans.

Geraldine Ferraro has been the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Human Rights Commission since 1994.
