Dian Fossey

DATES: 1932-1985

ABOUT HER
Dian Fossey at the age of 31, with no previous zoology experience, travelled to Africa to observe gorillas in the wild. There she met Louis Leakey who helped set her up in her first site in Zaire observing gorillas.

As an astute and patient observer of gorilla behavior, she dispelled many of the myths about mountain gorillas' violence. Unarmed, she sat within a few feet of them almost every day for 22 years. She established the Karisoke Research Center, Zaire, in 1967. Fossey received a Ph.D. in zoology from Cambridge University.

In 1985 she was found murdered at her campsite. Some believe she was murdered because of her work to stop the poaching of gorillas. Due largely to Fossey's research and conservation work, mountain gorillas still exist in Rwanda and other countries.
