Martha Graham

DATES: May 11, 1894 - 1991

ABOUT HER
At 7 years old, Martha Graham saw her first dance performance and vowed to become a dancer. By 30 years old she was not only performing, but was also one of the first women choreographers. She became one of the world's most successful choreographers, male or female.

By the mid-1930s she was important enough to be invited to dance at the Olympic Games in Hitler's Germany. She refused because of the racism there and the persecution of people she knew. Martha Graham danced for eight U.S. presidents, created over 170 dances, and helped bring different international styles of dancing to modern dance. Her name became virtually synonymous with that of dance in the United States.

In 1970, at the age of 76, she stopped dancing.
