Frida Kahlo

BIRTHDAY: July 6, 1907 - July 13, 1954

ABOUT HER
Born in Mexico of European and Mexican parents, Frida Kahlo contracted polio at the age of six and was then in a severe bus accident that led to many operations, much time in the hospital and, many years later, to her death at the age of 47.

It was during her convalescence from the accident that Frida started to paint, using art to express her struggles. Her art reflects not only her disabilities, but her involvement with Communism, the Mexican revolution, Leon Trotsky, her marriage to Diego Rivera, and Mexican folk art.

After her death in 1954, she quickly became a cult figure for her strength of will to live and to paint, her striking beauty, and her deceptively simple, vivid, surrealist art.
