Golda Meir

photo of Golda Meir Golda Meir was one of the founders of Israel, committed to her people and her land.

Born in Kiev, Russia, Golda. Meir moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with her family in 1906. There, while still in her teens, she became a Zionist, a person dedicated to creating a homeland for Jews. She moved to Israel in 1921 and quickly became active in the government. She became secretary of the Council for Women Workers in 1928, a member of the Executive Committee in 1934, and then head of the Executive Committee's political department in 1936.

In 1948 she was one of the signers of the proclamation of independence for the state of Israel, and was its prime minister from 1969 to 1974. She worked tirelessly to create a country for her people and to serve both the people and the country.

Golda Meir died in Jerusalem on December 8, 1978.
