Mother Teresa

BIRTHDAY: August 27, 1910 - 1997

ABOUT HER
In 1928, Albanian-born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu became a nun and took the name Teresa. In 1948 the Catholic Church gave her permission to work among the poor of Calcutta. There she started the religious order the Missionaries of Charity, as well as the Nirmal Hriday ("Pure Heart") Home for Dying Destitutes in Calcutta. Subsequently she and the Missionaries of Charity extended her work onto five continents, running hospitals, schools, orphanages, and shelters for lepers and the dying poor.

In 1990, at the age of 80, Mother Teresa began to scale back her own work with the poor because of health problems.
