The Action Reflection Process in Action

Teachers Collaborating in front of the computer

This section offers a virtual experience of the Action Reflection Process based on actual meetings. Susan (Grade 5) is the presenting teacher. She taught a unit on Bones and Skeletons (Insights, 1997-CUSER). Her team members included the principal, special educator, science curriculum specialist, media specialist, and classroom teachers from Grades 4 and 5.

Susan shared the work of three students (a typical student, an at-risk student, and an IEP student) with the team three times. Below you can choose to read one or all of these three sessions. The dialogue has been modified to present the major themes in a readable format.

star Session 1 demonstrates how to introduce a team to the Action Reflection Process and illustrates how team members discuss a pre-assessment to identify what students already know about the unit's concepts.

star Session 2 illustrates how team members discuss an embedded assessment to identify what students need to know about the unit's concepts.

star Session 3 illustrates how team members discuss a final evaluation to identify what students learned about the unit's concepts and to evaluate the Action Reflection Process.
