Getting to Know the ASAP Web Site
There are many resources and readings available regarding assessment
and accountability. We have designed our web site around four main themes
to guide your exploration of these issues.
- Click on Accountability
for material on standards, developing an accountability system, high
stakes testing, the No Child Left Behind legislation and other topics
related to accountability.
- Click on Classroom Practices
to find practical guidance on different types of assessments, such
as portfolios, performance-based assessment, and student self-assessment.
In this section you will also find readings on concepts such as backward
design and authentic assessment.
- Click on Using Data to learn more
about using classroom and schoolwide data to improve student achievement.
- Click on Narrowing the Gap
to locate resources and readings about the achievement gap, teaching
and assessing diverse learners, and legislation related to equity
in education.
Resources and readings with a T icon are designed for teachers, while
those with an A icon are for administrators.
The remaining features of the site are included to provide you with
further support in understanding assessment.
- Click on Professional Development
to participate in ASAP’s online course or to learn about specific
professional development initiatives related to assessment.
- Click on Tools to access ASAP’s self-assessment
tool, resource compendium, schoolwide assessment planning tool, and
several assessment case studies.
- Click on Glossary for definitions of
commonly used assessment terms.
- Click on Calendar to view or search for
assessment-related professional development or events.
- Click on Discuss to initiate or participate in an online conversation
with other educators about assessment.
- Use the keyword search to locate resources
or readings on a specific topic. Click on Fine
Tune Your Search to conduct a more refined search.
Accessibility
In designing its web site, the Assessing Student Achievement Project
(ASAP) follows guidelines aimed at ensuring that the site is accessible
to all individuals based on federal requirements outlined in Section
508—the "Electronic and Information Technology Accessibility
Standards," authorized by the Architectural and Transportation
Barriers Compliance Board—as well as recommendations of The World
Wide Web Consortium (W3C).
The following elements are examples of some of the guidelines we have
followed:
- Skip Navigation: A "Skip Navigation" option is available
for users with mobility impairments and those who use screen-reader
software to proceed directly to the main content of a Web page without
having to encounter repetitive navigation links.
- Text equivalents for non-text elements: We have supplied alternative
text (ALT tags) to describe the purpose of non-text elements.
- Cascading Style Sheets: Style sheets have been used to control layout
and presentation, and pages have been tested with style sheets turned
off to assure readability.
