INTEGRATING
ACADEMIC AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION: BIOLOGY/BIOTECHNOLOGY
CURRICULUM UNITS
Goals
of the Units
Both units are intended to:
Broaden
the learning of both academic and technical education students
to enable ALL students to continue on to higher education
and to enter the high-skilled workforce;
- Enable
all students to master the Life Sciences portion of the
national science education standards, and technical knowledge/skills
in national bioscience industry skill standards;
- Relate
classroom learning to real life and workplace applications,
and to historical and ethical topics.
These
two units integrate the best of academic and technical education
content and pedagogy. For academic students, the curriculum
provides linkages between conceptual learning and application
of knowledge and skills to real world uses in their personal
lives and the workforce. For technical students the curriculum
links the mastery of techniques and skills with u nderlying
science principles, needed for progress in higher educationand
in careers.
To
help all students meet these goals, the units are designed
to accommodate different learning and teaching styles. They
do this by providing learning experiences in a variety of
formats. Each unit weaves together readings, activities, laboratories,
discussions, and analyses. The curriculum relates learning
to careers and current issues in the world. Students conduct
independent research, to investigate further the information
they have learned.
