The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)--part of the United States Department of Transportation) is responsible for developing and enforcing motor vehicle safety standards, implementing traffic safety consumer programs, conducting research on traffic safety, and developing countermeasures, programs, and materials that promote traffic safety. NHTSA also implements a highway safety grant program to assist states, territories, and Indian Nations in addressing their specific highway safety problems. Primary responsibility for injury prevention within the United States Department of Health and Human Services Lies with the Public Health Service (PHS). Within the PHS lies the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and within the CDC, the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC). The Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) also has a designated Injury Prevention Contact within each PHS regional office, as does every state Maternal and Child Health (MCH) office.
