Federal Field Guide:
Indian Health Service and Bureau of Indian Affairs

From Summer 1994
Volume I, Number 2

The Indian Health Service (IHS), part of the Public Health Service, provides health services to American Indians and Alaskan Natives. The IHS Injury Prevention Program engages in projects and technical assistance in injury prevention and traffic safety. An injury control coordinator is located in each of the 12 IHS regional offices. For more information, contact Rick Smith, Injury Prevention Program Manager, at (301) 443-1054.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), U.S. Department of the Interior, has primary responsibility for federal relations with the 543 federally recognized Indian tribes. The BIA's Indian Highway Safety Program (IHSP) operates as the equivalent of a governor's highway safety office for the tribes, providing dispersion and over-sight of federal traffic safety funds. For more information, contact Norma Long, Chief, Indian Highway Safety Programs, at (505) 766-2181.
