Evaluation Results
An evaluation questionnaire was completed by 41 participants. Of those,
23 identified themselves as highway safety professionals, 13 as public health
professionals, and 5 percent as "other." Many participants expressed
satisfaction with the workshop and suggested that it be repeated every two or
three years. Thirty-eight percent found that the opportunity to learn the
other disciplines' perspectives and to network were the conference's most
valuable features. Twenty-nine percent found the breakout groups to be the
most useful feature, while 24 percent were most interested in the panel
presentations.
In addition, participants found the conference useful because:
- It reinforced the importance of bringing a multitude of disciplines together
to address the injury problem.
- They learned practical strategies on how to initiate and maintain a
collaboration.
- It gave them the opportunity to speak with others from their state.
Although participants expressed a high level of overall satisfaction with the
conference, some made suggestions on how it could be improved. These
included:
- Ensure that both highway safety and public health representatives from each
state are present and hold breakout sessions by states rather than region.
- Define the purpose of the presentations more clearly; make sure that they are
focused and specific; and choose presenters who represent programs on the
vanguard of collaboration.
- Face the difficulties in and obstacles to collaboration more honestly.
- Allow ample time for participants in the breakout sessions to finish their
tasks.
Suggestions for assistance from NHTSA and CDC included:
- more funding and greater flexibility in funding mechanisms
- a national policy statement on collaboration and greater collaboration at the
national level
- examples of model programs and policies
- technical assistance
- periodic updates about policy, funding, agency direction, and other issues
A full evaluation report will be made to the organizations funding and
sponsoring Putting Partnerships Into Practice.
