Operation ABC Mobilization

Volume 2, Number 2 - January/February 1999

Operation ABC Mobilization is a national effort sponsored by the Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign. Its goals are to increase child safety restraint use through two annual "mobilizations" (one in May and another in November) that combine intensive enforcement of child occupant protection laws with media coverage of both the enforcement and the benefits of proper child restraint. America Buckles Up ChildrenThe first mobilization period, which took place in May 1998, involved more than 4,000 law enforcement organizations and resulted in an estimated savings of 670 lives, including a 35 percent drop in Memorial Day weekend motor vehicle fatalities. The Thanksgiving 1998 mobilization period was endorsed by more than 1,000 organizations.

In 1999, mobilizations will take place from May 24–31 and November 22–28. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will again ask national organizations and communities to sign an "Endorsement for Enforcement" form and actively support this effort by writing letters to the editor, submitting op-ed pieces, and participating in national and local mobilization activities. Endorsement forms, Operation ABC Mobilization Kits, and other information can be obtained from the Air Bag & Seat Belt Safety Campaign, c/o GMMB&A, 1010 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20007.
