Community "Speed Management" Demonstration Projects

Volume 4, Number 3 - Summer 2001

The U.S. Department of Transportation is soliciting applications for demonstration projects to create and evaluate cooperative programs in which engineering, enforcement, and education are used to manage traffic speeds.

Each community selected for this project will collect and analyze speed data from selected roads; identify and reassign speed limits based on these data; work with law enforcement personnel to implement strict speed enforcement policies; and develop an effective public information and education campaign designed to advise community members about the project.

The Department of Transportation Speed Management Team will provide financial and technical support work to the grantees, while the communities will focus on local implementation and data collection. A final report will summarize evaluation data and discuss "lessons learned."

The application deadline is July 24, 2001. Specifics can be found in the June 1, 2001, Federal Register (Volume 66, Number 106, pages 29855-29861) or on-line at frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/getdoc.cgi?dbname=2001_register&docid=01-13721-filed.
