The Center for College Health and Safety congratulates
David Roselle of University of Delaware and Robert Carothers of University
of Rhode Island
for being the 2003 award recipients.
David
Roselle, President of the University
Delaware, has been an active and vocal supporter of alcohol prevention
efforts at the University of Delaware and in the surrounding community of
Newark. Activities at UD include: policy changes, increased enforcement, and
ensuring that students are aware of the consequences of abusing alcohol and
violating policies. Policies instituted under Roselle’s leadership include
the first ever parental notification policy in the US, a “three strikes
you’re out” AOD policy, and a five star rating system for Greek
organizations which judges them against the principles they say they have.
Additionally, UD has a stringent tailgating policy at football games which
reduced alcohol-related trips to the emergency room from the stadium by 100%
in the first year it was instituted.
Through the AMOD program, UD has developed a broad-based community coalition with constituencies in the city of Newark to address high-risk drinking on campus and in the surrounding community. The Building Responsibility Coalition has been instrumental in initiating the following efforts:
The Building Responsibility Coalition has also taken on a leadership role in developing a statewide initiative around alcohol issues.
