Edgewood College
President James
Ebben has led a significant press for change on the Edgewood College campus
regarding student drug and alcohol abuse. After increasing funding for alcohol
and other drug prevention projects, President Ebben provided the necessary
support to hire a full time Alcohol and Other Drug Awareness (AODA) counselor.
This attention to the individual approach to substance abuse prevention and
treatment is complemented by President Ebben’s understanding of and
commitment to a comprehensive environmental approach to prevention. His leadership
has increased alcohol awareness and education activities for freshman, bringing
in nationally known speakers to address AOD issues and providing alcohol-free
social options for students. In order to address the prevalence of high-risk
drinking, President Ebben employed a multi-faceted approach to AOD prevention,
calling on parents and the local community to assist in this endeavor. His
commitment to changing the culture of college drinking through policy and
environmental strategies have and will continue to set a standard for other
college presidents looking to address this issue.
