University of California - San Diego
Before her retirement from the University of California, San Diego, President Alice Hayes actively supported alcohol and other drug prevention efforts on the UCSD campus and in the surrounding community.
President
Alice Hayes has long established herself as an outspoken university president
addressing student alcohol and other drug issues. In addition to her contributions
to campus policy and environmental prevention initiatives, she has remained
committed to community collaboration to address the problem. She works closely
with other organizations seeking to reduce underage drinking in the San Diego
area, and also with several other colleges and universities in Southern California.
The University of California San Diego offers a multitude of alcohol-free
social events, and a well-publicized Alcohol Awareness Week with speakers,
trainings and workshops on high-risk drinking. President Hayes also convened
a group of students called the Campus Culture Committee to implement a social
norms marketing campaign. Her outspokenness and visibility about alcohol misuse
are complimented by her allotment of sufficient resources to campus projects
and programs to address the issue. Through her endeavors at UCSD and in the
region, President Hayes works to foster a safe environment for students and
acts as a model for other presidents hoping to do the same.
