During
his most recent appointment as President of the Ohio State University, William
Kirwan proved himself to be a powerful player in the effort to reduce high-risk
drinking on college campuses. A vocal proponent of the environmental management
approach, President Kirwan supported comprehensive efforts to make the OSU
campus a healthier place for students to live and study. Kirwan visibly supported
and endorsed alcohol-free activities and prevention programs at OSU, frequently
attending events in person. Kirwan engaged the support and commitment of OSU’s
neighboring communities and parents throughout these efforts. Since OSU’s
prevention initiatives were instituted, the OSU campus witnessed a 15% decrease
in high-risk drinking. As Kirwan assumes the role of Chancellor of the University
System of Maryland, he remains committed to preventing student alcohol use.
President Kirwan continues to be an important asset to his university and
to the Presidents Leadership Group as an effective and dedicated supporter
of collegiate alcohol prevention.
