R. Vic Morgan Sul Ross State University
For the past several years, President R. Vic Morgan has been a concerned and dedicated leader in preventing problems associated with student AOD use at Sul Ross State University, as well as within the community at large. At Sul Ross, President Morgan developed several intervention activities to address this issue, including:
President Morgan has spoken out about the risks of substance abuse to new students at college orientation, as well as to a diverse array of student groups. He established the Alcohol Education Coalition – consisting of AOD staff, faculty, the dean of students, student representatives, and other representatives from AOD community coalitions – which has defined four major areas of AOD prevention: 1) social norming; 2) peer education; 3) environmental management; and 4) student assistance.
He has also worked in the community, hand-in-hand with the local government and other key community members, to reduce alcohol outlet hours of operation and ‘happy hour’ drink specials. President Morgan has also funded travel to meetings and conferences for college administrators and students to better understand issues in AOD prevention, as well as providing funding for speakers and trainings on campus. Notably, President Morgan has helped to provide alcohol education at resident assistant trainings, health fairs with screenings on alcohol abuse, and videos about common misconceptions regarding alcohol use on campus via the school’s campus station.
