Donna E. Shalala

University of Miami

President Donna E. Shalala has made strident efforts on The University of Miami campus to address issues of AOD use and prevention. In less than a year on campus, President Shalala secured funds from the Kaiser Family Foundation to support a University Commission on Alcohol Issues. The Commission includes Board of Trustee members, faculty, staff, students, parents and community members, and develops comprehensive, campus-wide, long-term strategies to address the AOD prevention and intervention needs of The University of Miami students. President Shalala charged the Commission with assessing and evaluating current AOD programs, services, and best practices from across the country in order to better design the prevention initiatives of University of Miami.

Due to President Shalala’s efforts, The University of Miami was selected by the North American Interfraternity Conference as a pilot school to launch the “Alcohol Summit” program, a curriculum for fraternity and sorority leaders designed to assist students in furthering campus AOD prevention efforts and to help them better promote a healthy and safe culture on campus.
