University of Iowa
As a physician, President Skorton has a deep awareness of the detrimental health effects of abusive alcohol consumption, and firmly supports the concepts laid out in Be Vocal, Be Visible, Be Visionary, which advocates that college presidents should publicly acknowledge campus alcohol issues, define campus expectations and standards, and implement prevention plans to change the culture of AOD use and abuse on campus.
In 1999, President Skorton prohibited alcohol in University residence halls at all times, regardless of a student’s age. In 2001 upon President Skorton’s solicitation, the Iowa City Council enacted an ordinance prohibiting certain drink specials. President Skorton has also charged the University of Iowa with extensive counseling and education initiatives, ranging from free-of-charge student health service counseling, alcohol education workshops, and a student organization called “Night Games” which plans alcohol-free monthly programming.
President Skorton continues to act as a catalyst on the University of Iowa campus and in the surrounding community to affect positive change in AOD prevention.
