Illinois College
The new President
of Illinois College continues his strong commitment to the goals and ideals
of the Presidents Leadership Group. Before his retirement from the presidency
of Gustavus Adolphus College in the spring of 2002, Axel Steuer addressed
student alcohol abuse on his campus through his implementation of several
different alcohol prevention strategies. He worked to raise awareness of the
dangers of alcohol through programs targeting high-risk groups, curriculum
infusion, and eliminating "mixed messages" on campus, all of which
have contributed to a change in the culture around drinking at Gustavus Adolphus
College. President Steuer also addressed the highly visible issue of abusive
drinking at sorority and fraternity parties and helped coordinate a prevention
competition among Greek-letter groups called "Greeks Giving Back,"
where the winners were encouraged to donate their cash awards to local non-profit
organizations. President Steuer also helped to plan, facilitate, and sponsor
alcohol-free social activities, educational forums, and community services
projects. The Center for College Health and Safety is pleased to have Steuer
as a member of the Presidents Leadership Group, and looks forward to his continued
leadership in alcohol and other drug prevention at his new institution.
