Weber State University
Before
his retirement from Weber State University (WSU) in the fall of 2002, President
Thompson actively supported alcohol and other drug prevention efforts on the
WSU campus and in the surrounding community. During his tenure, WSU increased
its alcohol awareness and education activities, including establishing the
student club, Students Choosing Other Recreational Endeavors (SCORE), which
provides alcohol-free social and recreational options to the campus community.
Under Thompson’s leadership, WSU administration worked to consistently
enforce the school’s “zero tolerance” policy.
President Thompson envisioned WSU as a valued local partner to surrounding communities. With his support, WSU’s AOD prevention program forged relationships with local substance abuse prevention programs, by participating in community coalitions and sending university students as peer educators into local high-risk schools to teach and advise on leadership and alcohol, tobacco, and drug prevention activities. The university continues to maintain and support these programs.
WSU is currently in the process of expanding its intervention methods to include a more comprehensive approach to combat alcohol and other drug abuse. The Higher Education Center is pleased to have President Thompson as a member of the Presidents Leadership Group, and looks forward to his continued leadership in alcohol and other drug prevention.
