Clarkson College
Since beginning his tenure at Clarkson College in 1997, President Upright
has actively supported change on campus in an effort to reduce high-risk drinking
and substance abuse. Clarkson College has seen an increase in alcohol education
and awareness programs for employees and students, now offered in each of
the academic programs, employee orientation, college community meetings, campus
living units, and student publications. President Upright has also supported
intervention strategies including counseling and treatment.
His concern for the well-being of his students on an individual level is complemented by his understanding of the need for environmental approaches to prevention. He has been actively serving as chair of the Drug and Alcohol Committee, whose aim is to create a comprehensive strategic plan which is based on initial and follow-up surveys of students, faculty, and staff. Key components of the program include reviewing and improving drug and alcohol policies with related consequences, as well as plans for working with law enforcement, health and human service agencies, and the community to address the issue of high-risk alcohol and drug use. Clarkson College plans to implement the program in the fall of 2004.
Because of President Upright’s dedication to reducing high-risk drinking amongst the students at Clarkson College, he is a valued member of the Presidents Leadership Group. The Center looks forward to working with him to further implement environmental strategies to combat this issue.
