Materials & Curricula

Developing engaging, research-based educational materials is an important facet of COPE’s work. These materials range from interactive reading applets to comprehensive mathematics curricula.

When building curriculum materials, we apply lessons learned from relevant research and actual classroom practice. We create academically-rigorous, high-quality, standards-based materials which put students at the center of their own learning.

In 1995, COPE began work on MathScape: Seeing and Thinking Mathematically, a middle school mathematics curriculum. Published by Glencoe/McGraw-Hill and currently in its 2nd edition, MathScape promotes student and teacher inquiry as a way of building mathematics content knowledge.

More recently, COPE developed and wrote a series of online middle school math lessons for the Columbus (Ohio) Public Schools. These lessons took advantage of applets and animations, and were fully aligned to state and local education standards. COPE is currently working with the National Library of Virtual Manipulatives, based at Utah State University, to make use of innovative emerging technology to create, deliver, and assess the effectiveness of interactive online instructional materials for K-12 mathematics instruction.

COPE's materials and curriculum development work seeks to accomplish the following:

COPE has developed a number of educational applets to supplement text-based math curricula. Applets are small computer programs which help students think about a specific problem. Some samples of the applets we have created are on our Portfolio page.
