New Research Report!

The Effective Access project recently released a final report culminating 3 years of research on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) educators' use of digital resources. The project, funded as a part of the National Science Foundationís National Science Digital Library (NSDL) program, focused on high school STEM educators as an important and broad subset, as high school STEM remains a priority of education reform in the United States. As a multi-layered project, this research is organized into several areas: the technology itself (technology access and capacity; the technology environment); the content and design of the digital resources; and the perceptions, assumptions, experiences, and practices of the teachers. Important lenses for the examination of these research areas are the social-cultural contexts and demographics of the educators, students, and technology designers. Available on-line.

New Video!

Making schools work for all students
(Winner of the Catalyst Award for Excellence Bronze Award)

Gender Healthy/Respectful Schools an award-winning video, was produced and developed by the EEC's Gender, Diversities, & Technology Institute and 7 Generations Video.

The video is approximately 18 minutes. (NOTE: To view Gender-Healthy Schools on your computer, you will need a media player like Real One Player and/or QuickTime Player.)

Gender Healthy/Respectful Schools captures the experiences and lessons learned in a three-year project in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts schools. Funding from the Caroline and Sigmund Schott Foundation allowed teacher teams to develop projects that would contribute to the creation of schools in which girls and boys thrive socially, emotional, and academically; pursue interests and build competencies free from gender-biased, stereotypical expectations; and become confident that they can and do make a difference in their world. The video highlights key characteristics of gender healthy/respectful schools.

Individual copies of Gender-Healthy Schools are available at $20 each. They can be ordered from the Gender, Diversities & Technology Institute, EDC, 55 Chapel Street, Newton, MA 02458. Checks should be payable to EDC.

Proceedings from the Inter-American Forum
San Jose, Costa Rica
February 7-8, 2002
The Institute and our partner, the Universidad de Costa Rica's Center for Research in Women's Studies, brought together 26 participants from 10 countries around the Americas to begin an ongoing dialogue about gender violence. The goal of the Forum was to bring together people who weren't part of the "usual crowd" at international gatherings, but rather to link practitioners and researchers and to reach across boundaries of country and language to focus on how education can support the elimination of gender violence.
