Innovations in End-of-Life Care
an international journal of leaders in end-of-life care

About Innovations

About Innovations Online:
ISSN 1541-4744

Innovations is an international peer-reviewed journal for leaders in end-of-life care published online from 1999-2003. Bimonthly, thematic issues aimed to promote more humane, comprehensive and coordinated care to persons with life-threatening illness and their families, such that patients experience enhanced comfort, higher physical functioning and a greater sense of well-being at the end of life. Sponsored by Last Acts, an initiative of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, through a grant to the Center for Applied Ethics and Professional Practice at Education Development Center, Inc., Innovations had its editorial offices in Newton, Massachusetts. Mildred Z. Solomon, EdD, served as editor-in-chief of Innovations.

The archived online journal is still free and accessible to all; our target audience is clinicians and health care professionals, though many articles will also be of interest to policy makers and the public. Whereas many journals focus on results of research studies with little attention to the mechanisms responsible for those outcomes, Innovations has sought to provide clinicians and researchers the opportunity to detail the process of designing, implementing, evaluating, and sustaining new practices to improve palliative care.

Each issue is theme-based and includes a Featured Innovation, which spotlights a promising practice in end-of-life care. Every issue also includes an Editorial and International Perspectives, in which authors from around the world explore cultural and national assumptions about how best to address the featured topic. The Read More and Resources & Tools pages offer readers targeted references and relevant websites, as well as original tools designed by our featured innovators. Some issues include a Personal Reflections department, where we publish essays about the personal impact of a particular issue on patients, families, volunteers, or health care professionals.

About Innovations in Print:

Innovations in End-of-Life Care has had a standing section in the Journal of Palliative Medicine (JPM) the official journal of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM). Innovations will continue to be published in JPM through April 2004.

Journal of Palliative Medicine is an interdisciplinary journal that deals with patient care at the end of life. It covers the latest developments in drug and non-drug therapies for symptoms and syndromes that affect patients with life-threatening diseases, highlights palliative care programs worldwide, explores palliative care education, and reports on the latest developments in pain and symptom management.
