Subacute and Extended Care: Pain Management Guidelines

1. Initiate

  • Admission - scheduled analgesics
  • Admission - pain acknowledged or observed
  • Any new report of pain or change in pain status

2. Use

  • For up to 3 days with initiation of scheduled analgesics (continue use if patient's goal not met)
  • All PRN pain management medications
  • While pain is a Medicare/insurance qualifier

3. Evaluate

  • Evaluate data according to pain management principles
