Dr. Timothy Gilligan is a medical oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and an instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He received a bachelor's degree from Swarthmore College, where he studied English literature and then received his medical degree from Stanford University's School of Medicine. After a residency in internal medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital, he completed a fellowship in medical oncology at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and then joined the staff in his current position. He also serves on the Ethics Committee at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Dr. Gilligan specializes in cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate, and testicles. His primary research focus concerns racial disparities in prostate cancer incidence and mortality and he is currently developing community outreach projects to increase prostate cancer knowledge and awareness in African American neighborhoods in Boston. He has published multiple articles on issues related to limiting care and withdrawing care at the end of life.
