Thomas Smith, MD

Thomas Smith Photo Dr. Thomas Smith is the Lowry Professor of Oncology, Medicine, and Health Administration at Virginia Commonwealth University. He and colleagues are currently studying ways to improve the quality of cancer care, and he serves on the Institute of Medicine National Cancer Policy Board. He chaired the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Health Service Research Committee 1995-1998, charged with making national clinical practice guidelines for cancer treatment and follow-up. He co-chaired the ASCO-wide curriculum for improving end of life care, "Optimizing Cancer Care—The Importance of Symptom Management," available at www.asco.org. He chairs the division of hematology/oncology at VCU, has a large oncology practice, and directs the Thomas Palliative Care Unit along with Patrick Coyne, RN, MSN.
