Peter A. Selwyn, MD, MPH

Peter A. Selwyn is professor and chairman of the Department of Family Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, NY, and director of the Palliative Care Service and the HIV Palliative Care Program at Montefiore Medical Center. Dr. Selwyn received his MD from Harvard Medical School, his MPH from Columbia University, and his clinical training at Montefiore Medical Center. He has been involved in AIDS-related clinical care, research, and teaching for over 18 years, and has written more than 100 articles on AIDS, substance use, and end-of-life care. He was a faculty scholar of the Project on Death in America (1997-2000), and is the author of the memoir Surviving the Fall: The Personal Journey of an AIDS Doctor (Yale University Press, 1998).

Mimi Rivard, MS, NP

Mimi Rivard is the nurse practitioner and clinical coordinator for the HIV Palliative Care Program at Montefiore Medical Center. She received her nursing diploma from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Waterbury, CT, and her MS in nursing from Simmons College, Boston, MA. Ms. Rivard has been involved in HIV care delivery and program development for over 12 years, in Boston, Chicago, and New York. She has been active regionally and nationally in the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care and the national network of AIDS Education and Treatment Centers, and has also been involved in consulting activities concerning HIV and palliative care in southern Africa.

Deborah Kappell, MPH

Deborah Kappell is the data manager for the HIV Palliative Care Program, and serves as the liaison between project data needs and the larger hospital's electronic data information systems. Ms. Kappell received a BS degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her MPH in epidemiology from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.

Bill Goeren, MSW

Bill Goeren is the social worker for the HIV Palliative Care Program, involved with clinical care, counseling, family interventions, and bereavement support. Mr. Goeren received his MS in social work from Columbia University, and has been active in HIV clinical care and advocacy for over 13 years, with a particular interest in end-of-life care and bereavement.

Hector LaFosse, AA

Hector LaFosse is the outreach coordinator for the HIV Palliative Care Program, helping to engage and provide follow up for patients in the community and their families. He has received additional training in HIV pre- and post-test counseling, and is currently completing his studies at Lehman College in the Bronx. Mr. LaFosse is a certified substance abuse counselor (CASAC), and is particularly involved in the management of active substance-using patients with palliative care needs.

Charles E. Schwartz, MD

Charles E. Schwartz is a psychiatrist and internist in the HIV Palliative Care Program. He received his MD from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, and trained in internal medicine and psychiatry training at St. Vincent's Hospital and Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, respectively, both in New York City. He is an associate professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and has been an attending physician in the Departments of Psychiatry and Medicine since 1984. As director of the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service at the North Central Bronx Hospital, a New York City municipal hospital, and as national president of the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry, he developed a growing interest in the comprehensive care of disenfranchised populations, particularly HIV patients and the chronically mentally ill.

Rev. Rosa Caraballo

Rev. Rosa Caraballo is chaplain for the HIV Palliative Care Program, providing pastoral care for patients and families. She received her BA in sociology from Hunter College and her masters in professional studies/urban ministry at Alliance Theological Seminary. Rev. Caraballo has been involved in the linkage of spirituality to the health care community since 1985, when she founded Bruised Reed Ministry, a faith-based AIDS service organization located in the Highbridge section of the Bronx. In 2001, she received the New York State Department of Health Award for Outstanding Service in HIV/AIDS.

Delma Luciano

Delma Luciano is the research technologist for the HIV Palliative Care Program, whose responsibilities include maintaining and managing the project's database, and assisting with manuscript preparation and data analysis for program evaluation activities. In addition to her professional and family responsibilities as a full-time wife and mother of three, Ms. Luciano is currently studying to become a nurse.

Linda Farber Post, JD, BSN, MA

Linda Farber Post is the bioethicist for the HIV Palliative Care Program, and is involved in clinical management of cases with bioethical issues as an integral member of the multi-disciplinary team. Ms. Post received a BS degree in nursing from Skidmore College, a masters degree in psychiatric nursing and education from New York University, and a law degree from Cardozo School of Law, New York, NY. She is a consultant in the Division of Bioethics at Montefiore Medical Center, and an assistant professor of bioethics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Her work in recent years has focused on palliative care with particular interests in long-term care, HIV, and incarcerated populations.
