Dr. Stein Kaasa is chair of the Palliative Medicine Unit at the Department of Oncology, Trondheim Regional Hospital. Furthermore, he is a professor of palliative medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, The
Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Dr. Kaasa works as a
clinician in the Palliative Care Unit. This year he is on sabbatical
in the United States.
Dr. Kaasa specialized in medical oncology and radiotherapy at the
Norwegian Radium Hospital. In 1993, he received the first chair in
palliative medicine in the Nordic countries and moved to Trondheim,
Norway to establish the University Based Palliative Care Program. Dr.
Kaasa has been working in the area of quality of life assessment and
clinical trials for more than 15 years. He has published extensively
in several areas of clinical research, primarily in palliative
oncology and palliative medicine. He served as chairman of the EORTC
Study Group on Quality of Life and was one of the investigators of the
development of the EORTC QLQ-C30, a well known instrument for
measuring quality of life. Dr. Kaasa was also part of the
International Quality of Life Assessment Group (IQOLA) for the
international validation of the SF-36. Dr. Kaasa is an active member
of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) Research
Network and currently serves as president of the EAPC.
