Frances Kraus qualified as a Social Worker in 1981. She worked for 15 years in the therapeutic community field with the recovering mentally ill, drug users and adolescents including one year in New York City before coming to St. Christopher's Hospice in 1990 as a Principal Social Worker. In this role, she works with patients and their families before death and in bereavement. In 1998, she took up post as Project Leader of the Candle project, which was a new program for the Hospice. The Candle Project extends the support St Christopher's has always provided to children and families bereaved by death under the care of the Hospice to any child or family in South East London, most of whom are bereaved by a death that is sudden or unexpected. The project also offers training, advice, and consultancy to professionals in the London area, and produces literature and resources for parents and professionals.
Ms. Kraus has authored several booklets for bereaved children, parents and carers of children who have experienced the death of a loved one, including unexpected death of a parent. These booklets are referenced on the Resources and Tools page, including information on how to access them. She has also published several articles in professional journals on how professionals can help bereaved children, referenced on the Read More page.
