Innovations in End-of-Life Care
an international journal of leaders in end-of-life care
Mary Kraft, MD, MPA

Dr. Kraft is an Associate Anesthetist at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), Boston, and an Instructor in
Anesthesia at Harvard Medical School. A 1975 graduate of Boston University School of Medicine, she trained in
anesthesia at the MGH, serving as the first female chief resident in anesthesia in 1979. Interested in health
care policy, she took a year off from anesthesia and matriculated at Harvard University's Kennedy School of
Government, where she received a Masters in Public Administration in 1989. Returning to the world of clinical
medicine, she realized her talents and interests were best-suited to treating one patient at a time. To improve
these skills, she trained as a negotiator in 1991 and studied Clinical Pastoral Education at the MGH as a Kenneth
B. Schwartz Fellow in 1998. In addition to her clinical work, she is currently President of the Boston University
School of Medicine Alumni Association and serves on the Board of Directors, Physician Health Services (a Massachusetts
Medical Society corporation) and its Clinical Advisory Committee.
