Innovations in End-of-Life Care

Richard Della Penna, MD

Dr. Della Penna is a geriatrician and has been with the Southern California Permanente Medical Group for 23 years. He has been physician-in-charge of continuing care services, hospice, and home health at Kaiser Permanente’s San Diego Medical Center for the past 13 years. He is also the regional elder care coordinator for the Southern California region of Kaiser Permanente and the clinical lead for Kaiser Permanente Care Management Institute’s Elder Care Initiative. He has particular interest in developing and implementing systems that better address the needs of older adults in an integrated managed care environment. His focus has been in the areas of geriatric interdisciplinary team training, dementia, depression, frailty and end-of-life care. Dr. Della Penna is currently a member of the Institute of Medicine’s Committee to Improve Quality in Long Term Care and the National Advisory Committee of The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s national program office Promoting Excellence in End-of-Life Care.
