Dr. Lickiss is recognized internationally for developing the teaching of palliative medicine as a specialist body of knowledge in Australia. In the late 1980s, she founded the Sydney Institute of Palliative Medicine (SIPM) to promote academic palliative medicine and registrar (residency) training. She was chair of training for the Specialist Advisory Committee (SAC) in Palliative Medicine in the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) for many years. She has been a visiting professor in Japan, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, and in 1996 served as a consultant for WHO (Cancer Pain Relief) in China.
Dr. Lickiss graduated from the University of Sydney with postgraduate experience in Europe. Starting in 1970, she practiced as consultant in internal medicine with a special interest in cancer medicine and cancer epidemiology at the University of Tasmania before returning to Sydney in 1985 as director of palliative care at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. She has had dual professorial appointments with the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales for more than a decade. Currently, Professor Lickiss serves as consultant physician in palliative medicine, at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and at the Royal Hospital for Women (Gynecology Oncology Center).
